THE SCHOOL CREST and MOTTO       THE SCHOOL CREST and MOTTO

1.        The bird is an eagle.

2.        The book is the Bible.

3.        Viam Parantes: the school motto which means “Preparing the way.

Rationale

The School name “St. John’s” refers to St. John, the Evangelist, who wrote the 4th Gospel (the Gospel according to St. John).  The biblical symbol used for St. John the Evangelist is the Eagle.  The eagle is far sighted and a soaring bird that flies high in the skies.  John’s Gospel, considered the most penetrating theologically of our gospels, soars high – lofty in its thoughts and teaching.

As John’s Gospel prepares the way to Christ, so the students of St. John’s are prepared to lead others to Christ by following the teachings of St. John.  St. John’s Gospel is well known for such phrases as: I am the Way; I am the light of the world etc.

Thus the symbol of the torch on the crest represents this same theme.  We are to become torch bearers bringing the light of God’s truth to all that we meet – “lighting the way for ourselves and others”.

The Colors

Green, yellow (gold) and white.  The green represents the fertility of the African forests and earth; the yellow (gold) represent the richness of Ghana (especially its minerals – especially its gold).  The white represents the honesty and purity with which we strive to reach out to God and to others.

Understanding all of this helps to understand the richness of the motto of the school: Viam Parantes – Preparing the Way.
